Have Quilt, Will Travel
Not long ago, our family had a guest from China - a Brit who lives in Beijing and, with his physician wife, started a special home to treat Chinese orphans with serious medical conditions. Talking with Robin Hill of Healing Home, I could tell that he and Joyce had thoughtfully set up an environment where the children are welcomed with warmth and love. And part of that welcome is a handmade quilt. Robin explained that Joyce makes a quilt for every child, and wherever she travels, she packs a quilt in progress to work on by hand.
Most of us who craft have several projects in progress, stuffed into a big bag that is required cargo on every excursion, even if we're trying to go carry-on only. If they don't quite make it onto our itinerary, then at least we have the comfort of knowing we can stay occupied on the flight home. In our new book, Greetings From Brazil, we travel with the spunky Verna Jean as she takes in the striking colors and captivating customs of South America's largest country, then translates them into a catalog of memories with eight stunning quilt designs. From the playful Caipirinha, the country's favorite cocktail, to the brilliant Carnival, to the calming Iguacu Falls, we promise that you won't have an easy time deciding where to start.
